Capture

The app opens on the capture box. ⌘↩ keeps a thought as a fragment (a short note without a title), ⌘E opens it as a full note.
⏎ is a newline and never saves. esc never throws a draft away, even across a quit.
Tags render live as you type.

Everything, newest first, flat. The date shows in the gutter once per day, no headers.
j / k, gg / G, [d / ]d by day, ⏎ opens, x pins.
Previews: a note's opening lines, its todos and up to two images.
Two layouts, the theme's choice: ledger or stream.
10,000 items scroll without dropping frames.

A live-preview markdown editor with optional vim keys. Only the block you're writing in shows its markdown.

Backlinks with the sentence each link sits in.

⌘K: notes, fragments, tags and commands in one ranked list, in under 50 ms on 10,000 items.
/: search the text of every note, grouped by note; #tag and @name narrow it. Under 100 ms on 10,000 notes.
:tags: the tag tree. Tag pages show child tags and the tags often used with them.
⌃r renames a tag in every file at once; :undo puts it back.
#empty_kite finds everything without a tag; :orphans finds notes nothing links to.

⌘\ shows the sidebar: All, Pinned and Untagged at the top, Settings at the foot, the rest scrolls.
Folders mirror the vault on disk, empty ones too, each with its note count. n makes a folder or a subfolder.
A folder's page lists every note in it and links to its subfolders.
A vault without folders shows the tag tree instead. People are listed under either.
Keyboard only: j / k, l / h, ⏎, esc. Open folders and tags are remembered.

@mentions point at person notes, with aliases and @ completion.
A page per person: every sentence that mentions them, and who and what often comes up with them.
⌃r renames a person everywhere; :undo reverts.

:graph or gr: a live canvas. Zoom, pan and drag with the mouse, or h j k l.
Tags are nodes; notes hang off the tags they carry.

:lock encrypts a note with a password that can't be recovered. :unlock, :lockall, :passwd.
A locked note's text, tags, links and attachments never sit readable on disk or in the index.

Themes: Paper, Daylight, Fjord, Studio, Pine. Themes past the default light and dark are premium.
Your own CSS themes in ~/.kites/themes/, checked line by line.
