FAQ.

Where are my notes?

In ~/notes, unless you've chosen another folder. Run :vault to see which folder Paperkites is using. Each note is a .md file named after its title; fragments are in fragments/ and people in people/. See Your files.

Is there sync?

Not built in yet; it's coming. Your notes are ordinary files, so you can keep the folder in git, iCloud Drive, Dropbox or anything else that syncs folders, and point Paperkites at it with :vault <folder>. Your settings stay on each device.

Can I edit my notes in another editor?

Yes. Paperkites watches the folder while it runs, so changes made elsewhere show up within a moment. If the note is open in Paperkites with edits you haven't saved, it asks you to choose: :reload takes the file's version, and :w writes yours over it.

Do I need to save?

No. Paperkites saves as you write. :w is only for the case above.

Where did my draft go?

It's still in the capture box. Esc never discards, and the draft survives a reload and a quit. Press gh for home, then i.

You're in INSERT mode. Press esc first to reach NORMAL, then : or /.

How do I undo a rename?

• A tag or a username renamed with ⌃r in ⌘K: run :undo. It puts every file back as one operation.
• A note's title: change the title back. The file is renamed with it.

I deleted a note by mistake.

:delete moves a note to the trash, not away for good. Run :trash, select the note, and press ⏎ to put it back where it lived. Only :trash empty deletes for good.

How do I find notes I haven't tagged?

Run :tag empty_kite, type #empty in ⌘K, or open Untagged in the sidebar. Every note and fragment without a tag shows up there. The tag is never written into your files.

Is there a list of all my tags or people?

Yes: ⌘K. Type # first for tags, or @ first for people. The sidebar (⌘\) lists both too.

A mention has a dotted underline.

No person note has that username or alias. Make one with ⌃n in the @ completion list, or add the name to an existing person's aliases. See People.

Can I stop using vim keys?

Yes. In :settings, under Writing, turn vim keys off, or run :vim off. The editor is then always writing.

My theme isn't showing.

A theme with a mistake isn't used; paper stands in, and the status pill shows the file, line and problem. Fix it and save, or run :theme reload. Check that the first line says /* kites-theme: light */ or dark, so it's listed in the right row. See Themes.

Can I lock a note?

Yes, with a password of its own: :lock in the note. Its text and images are encrypted on disk, and it opens only with that password. See Locked notes.

I forgot a note's password.

It can't be recovered. Paperkites keeps no copy of the password and has no reset, so the note stays locked. Only its title can still be read.

Is a locked note safe to sync?

Yes. Everything below its title is encrypted, and nothing in the file opens without the password. Anyone with a copy can try to guess the password, though, so use a long one: a few random words.

Can I use a different folder?

Yes. :vault ~/somewhere/else switches to another folder. Nothing is copied or moved, and you can switch back the same way.

Can I delete the welcome notes?

Yes. They're ordinary notes and nothing depends on them. :keys still shows every key.
