Finding things.

There are two ways to look for something. ⌘K is for going somewhere. / is for reading across your notes. Tags, links and people connect notes to each other; tag pages, backlinks, the sidebar and the graph show those connections.

The list

Home shows everything, newest first, in one flat list. Fragments are shown whole. Notes show a title and their opening lines, their todos drawn as [ ] / [x], and up to two of their images.

There are no day headers. The date shows in the gutter once, on the first row of each day, and today's date is in the accent colour.

The mouse works too: click a row to open it. The same keys work in every list: tag pages, :notes, :pinned and :orphans.

Your theme picks one of two layouts for the list. Ledger puts the date in the gutter and the note beside it. Stream shows one card per note, with the time on the right and no gutter.

More lists

⌘K, summon

Press ⌘K from anywhere, type a few letters, and press ⏎. One list holds notes, fragments, tags and commands, ranked by how well they match, with the matched part marked. There are no section headers.

# first lists only tags, ranked by how recently and how often you use them (14 · today). There's no "all tags" page; this is it. @ first lists only people, and outside a note gp opens summon on that list.

Renaming a tag everywhere

Select a tag in ⌘K and press ⌃r. Paperkites renames it in every file that uses it, child tags included, as one operation: every file changes or none does. :undo puts it all back.

/, search

Press /, type, and press ⏎. Paperkites searches the text of every note. Results are grouped by note, one line per match, with the term highlighted.

Narrow a search by adding these to the query:

For example, /soil #garden finds "soil" only in notes tagged #garden. In a note, press esc before /, or it types into the note.

Tag pages

Open a tag's page with :tag garden, with gt on a tag in a note, or from ⌘K. A tag page shows:

• child tags in a quiet row under the title
• in the gutter, the tags this one is often used with, so tags relate without you keeping a hierarchy
• every note and fragment with the tag, in the same list as home

Notes without tags: #empty_kite

Every note and fragment without a tag carries a built-in tag, #empty_kite. Use it to find what you haven't sorted yet:

• :tag empty_kite
• #empty in ⌘K
• /something #empty_kite in search
• Untagged in the sidebar

It's virtual: it's never written into a file, and it can't be renamed.

Backlinks

At the foot of every note, Linked from lists each note that links to it, with the sentence the link sits in.

Pinned notes

Pin a note to keep it at the top of the lists.

• :pin and :unpin in a note
• x on a row in any list
• :pinned lists pinned notes and fragments, and so does Pinned in the sidebar

Back and forward

⌃o and ⌃i go back and forward through where you've been, like a browser. Outside typing, ⌃h and ⌃l do the same. gh goes home from anywhere.
