Updates and help.

Paperkites keeps itself up to date. When something goes wrong, the bug form and the log are one command away.

Updates

Paperkites checks for a new version at launch and every six hours. A new one downloads in the background, and the status pill says it's ready, with :update to restart into it. You don't have to: a downloaded update installs the next time you quit.

CommandDoes
:updaterestart into a downloaded update; with none, check for one now
:update <version>download that release, an older one too; :update restarts into it once it's down

Settings › Updates shows the version you're on and where updates stand. Check for updates checks now, and turns into Restart to update once one is ready. Install a version installs any release by its version, an older one too.

A version you pick that way stays. Automatic updates leave it alone until you check for updates again.

Updates come from Paperkites' public releases on GitHub. If a check fails, Settings says Couldn't check · :logs has why.

Reporting a bug

CommandDoes
:bugopen the bug form in your browser, with the Paperkites and macOS versions filled in
:logsshow the log file in Finder, to attach to the report

The Help menu has the same, as Report a Bug… and Reveal Logs, along with Paperkites Docs and Contact Support….

The bug form is on GitHub, and reports there are public.

The log

The log is a file called main.log; :logs shows it in Finder. It records what the app can't show you: the window hanging, calls to the core that fail or are slow, and the core's own errors. It starts over once it grows past about 2 MB.

Your home folder is written in it as ~, but the names of folders and notes under it can still show. Read it before you attach it to a public report.

If Paperkites crashes

Your notes are handled by a separate part of the app, the core. If the core stops, Paperkites starts it again by itself, and it opens your vault again. If it stops again straight after a restart, it's left stopped rather than restarted over and over. Quit Paperkites, open it again, and send a bug report with the log.

Support

Write to [email protected]. Help › Contact Support… starts an email with your Paperkites version in the subject.

For Pro, your account and refunds, see Pro and your account.

Privacy

Paperkites has no analytics and no telemetry, and no crash reporter. Your notes stay on your Mac and never reach us.

The app goes online only to check for updates, to sign you in or open the purchase page in your browser when you ask, and, when you're signed in, to check your Pro licence (see How the app checks your licence). The bug form and the log go anywhere only when you send them. See the privacy policy.
