Pro and your account.

Most of Paperkites is free, for good, and needs no account. Pro adds the parts below. You buy it once, for $49, and it's yours on your Macs for every 1.x update.

Pro gates making things, never reading them. Your notes stay plain files on your disk whatever happens to Pro, and every note always opens.

What Pro includes

PartWhat it gives
Areas and projectsareas that hold projects, each with its own page, and Inbox, Today, Upcoming, Anytime, Someday and Logbook
Task markersthe todo states past open and done: cancelled, moved, scheduled, in progress, priority
People@mentions, and a page for everyone you write about
The graphyour notes and their links, as a map
ThemesDaylight, Fjord and your own themes. Paper, Studio and Pine are free.
Locked notesa password on any note
Cloud foldersa vault in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive

Run :pro to see every part of Pro and where it lives. j / k move, and ⏎ opens a part that has a page.

Without Pro these parts are off. Reach for one and the status pill says so, with how to try it: :account trial. Files they made open as the plain markdown they are.

The price

Pro is $49, paid once. There's no subscription, and nothing renews. It covers every 1.x update.

Pro belongs to your account, not to one Mac. Every Mac you sign in on with that account has it, up to 5 (see Your Macs).

The free trial

Try every part of Pro free for 14 days. No card is needed, and nothing is charged when it ends.

  1. Open :settings and go to Pro.
  2. Press Start free trial, or run :account trial.
  3. If you aren't signed in, choose Continue with Google or Continue with Apple. The trial starts right after you sign in.

When the trial starts, :pro opens. Settings › Pro shows the day it ends and how many days are left.

There's one trial per account and one per Mac. A Mac that has had a trial, under any account, doesn't get another, and neither does an account that has owned Pro.

Signing in

You need an account only for Pro. You sign in with Google or Apple, so there's no Paperkites password to keep.

WhereDoes
Settings › AccountContinue with Google or Continue with Apple
:account googlesign in with Google
:account applesign in with Apple
:accountwho is signed in, and where Pro stands

Signing in opens your browser. Finish there, and Paperkites picks it up by itself.

Signing in changes nothing in the app on its own. It lets a trial start, and a purchase made on the website show up by itself.

Buying Pro

Press Buy $49 in Settings › Pro, or run :account buy. Checkout opens in your browser: it's Stripe Checkout, and you pay once. When the payment goes through, Pro turns on in the app by itself. There's no key to paste.

Settings › Pro then says Paperkites Pro 1.x · yours to keep.

You can also buy on your account page, paperkites.app/account, signed in with the same Google or Apple account. The app picks it up at its next check, or run :account to check now.

Your Macs

Sign in with the same account on another Mac, and Pro is on there too. An account can be signed in on up to 5 Macs. A sixth is refused until you remove one:

This account is on 5 devices like this one already. Remove one, then sign in again.

Settings › Account › Devices lists every Mac signed in to the account. Remove signs one out; that Mac finds out at its next check. Your account page on the website lists them too, each with its own Remove.

More than one account

A work or college account can sit beside your own, each with its own Pro. In Settings › Account, Add an account signs in another one, kept separate. Switch account changes which one is in use, instantly and offline. Pro follows the account in use.

:account followed by part of an email address switches too, for example :account work.

When Pro ends: read-only

If a trial ends without buying, or Pro is refunded, Pro goes read-only. What you made with Pro opens and reads, but nothing new can be made with it and nothing made with it can be changed. Everything free stays editable, and every note still opens.

Refunds

Within 7 days of buying, you can ask for your money back. We review each request.

  1. Open :settings and go to Pro.
  2. Under the Pro card, press Ask for a refund…, then Send request. Or run :account refund.

Pro stays on while we review it, and the Pro card shows where your request stands. If we approve it, you get all your money back and Pro goes read-only on every Mac signed in to the account, the next time each one checks. You can also email [email protected] within the 7 days, with your order email or order id.

There's one refund per account and per card. Pro bought again after a refund is final: it can't be refunded, and there's no second trial. After 7 days you can't ask in the app any more. Pro stays yours with nothing more to pay, and after 120 days your Mac doesn't need to check in at all (see below). If we ever close the service, we publish a signed file that turns Pro on for good, for everyone, with no account and no server: Paperkites looks for it whenever it can't reach us.

How the app checks your licence

Without an account, Paperkites never goes online except to check for updates. Signed in, it checks your licence with our server at launch, every 6 hours and when your Mac wakes. A check sends a device id, an account id and a signature, nothing else. Nothing about your notes is ever sent.

Paperkites doesn't wait for the network to open: it checks the last answer it got, on your Mac. Between checks it works offline for up to about 30 days (during a trial, up to 3 days). Once 120 days have passed since you bought it, a device that has checked in since then never needs to check in again. With less than a day left, the status pill says so, for example Offline — Pro until Fri. If the time runs out, Pro is read-only until the next check gets through.

If your Mac's clock is behind, Settings › Pro says Waiting for a check. Set the clock right, and Pro comes back with the next check.

Signing out, and deleting the account

sign out of this MacSettings › Account › Sign out, or :account sign out—
sign another Mac outSettings › Account › Devices › RemoveDevices › Remove
delete the accountSettings › Account › Delete…, then Delete nowDelete account…, then Delete my account

Signing out turns Pro off on that Mac until you sign in again. Your notes stay where they are. Sign out on the website signs out only that browser.

Deleting the account deletes it at Paperkites, with its sign-ins and devices, and signs out every Mac. Pro bought on it goes with it: it isn't refunded, and it can't be moved to another account. If the account had a trial, a purchase or a refund, we keep an unreadable mark of that, so signing in again doesn't bring them back. Your notes stay on your Macs. They were never on our servers.

The account page also shows your licence, a trial while it runs, and your payments, each with Stripe's receipt.
